At SAS Counselling, we deeply respect and acknowledge that our work takes place on the traditional territories of the Treaty 7 Nations-the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai of the Blackfoot Confederacy, the Tsuut’ina Nation, and the Îyârhe Nakoda Nations (Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley), as well as the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3. We recognize the significance of these lands and the rich cultural heritage they hold, and we are committed to honouring and learning from them.
In our counselling practice, we believe that every person and every community carries stories of strength, resilience, and knowledge. Guided by Narrative Therapy, a form of psychotherapy that seeks to help people identify their values and the skills they have used to face problems, and the Tree of Life approach, a narrative therapy technique that uses a metaphor of a tree to explore a person's life and experiences, we recognize and honour the deep-rooted stories of Indigenous Peoples who have cared for this land since time immemorial.
We acknowledge the ongoing impacts of colonization and commit to listening with respect, walking with humility, and supporting healing through connection and shared stories. Our unwavering commitment to reconciliation drives us to create spaces where diverse voices, histories, and identities are seen, valued, and honoured, fostering a sense of hope and unity.
Aboriginal Narrative Therapy
At SAS Counselling, we draw on Aboriginal Narrative Therapy, an approach that integrates Indigenous worldviews, storytelling, and cultural practices into healing. This method acknowledges the impacts of colonization, intergenerational trauma, and systemic oppression, while emphasizing the strengths, resilience, and cultural identity of each individual. Through the power of storytelling, relational connection, and culturally grounded practices, clients are supported in reclaiming their narratives, honouring their heritage, and fostering holistic well-being.
